Urban Downtown Denver Engagement Session | Katelyn + Garette
When it comes to doing a date night in the city - where would you go with your partner? Do you have a favorite sports team? This is exactly what Katelyn and Garette kept in mind as we planned their urban Denver Engagement session in Downtown Denver.
Living in the heart of the city these two have MANY favorite restaurants. But one that they found themselves often on date nights was a small pizza shop in the middle of the city. They serve up whole pies and slices of pizza so G decided this would be a perfect representation of their love story. In addition to sharing the perfect slice of pizza at their favorite local spot, they love going to watch hockey at the Ball Arena for date night. So it was perfectly fitting that if we didn’t take their Denver Engagement photos at an Avs game - they HAD to wear their jersey’s! It’s also great bragging rights because this was the same year the Colorado Avalanche WON the Stanley cup. The energy of the city of Downtown Denver at this time when you wore an Avs jersey was absolutely ELECTRIC.
This might be the part where I throw in a really cheesy joke about how a guy walks into a bar and… But actually this was not a joke. We got to this pizza shop in the middle of the day to order a slice and Katelyn and Garette convinced the shop to let them throw their own pie into the oven as part of their engagement session. G called it smooth moves and I really cannot argue with that! I don’t know if he really convinced them on the spot or had called ahead to orchestrate the impossible but the staff in the kitchen let the two go behind the counter, toss their dough, and put it in the wood-fired pizza oven. I loved how much this felt like something that they would do together at home together or on a Friday night going out for pizza in the city.
As part of every engagement session I do I like to offer the option to do an outfit change in the middle of the session. It’s a great way to tell a story that continues past one moment and on to another. In this case we had come to the idea before our session that it would be really fun to have the juxtaposition of fancy, white outfits and the grunge of the city. Katelyn really wanted to be in an area that felt more grunge in Downtown Denver. So we did just that.
The upscale outfits really contrast the downtown vibe of the city during their engagement session. I love how they trusted me to take them into alleys and have them sit on the curb as cars whizzed by. It was a great way to create a lot of action in the city and show the imperfections and the day-to-day of what it would be like to wander around the city on a date night out.
I absolutely love this take on an engagement session and like to encourage anyone planning their engagement photoshoot to really think in depth about what they would normally do on a date night out and how that can play into making their engagement photos more authentic to their relationship.
